| Gordon - 2009-07-09 Gordy "The Assassin" MacCauley has ripped the guts out of the field in the latest round of the Benchmark homes racing series. Armed with his faithful teamate Jas Allen, "The Assassin" won round 3 solo after dispatching of his breakaway companions, the chase behind from 12 of New Zealand's strongest road teams amounted to a closing in on the margin but nothing could stop the Ex Aucklander on re-gaining the lead in New Zealands most prestigious racing series. |

 | Peoples Champion takes round 2 of the Benchmark Homes Tour - 2008-03-27 Aggressive riding by Genius Rider Gordon McCauley (Benchmark Homes Cycling Team) paid dividends when he won round two of the eight-round Benchmark Homes Tour in Timaru on Sunday. The Commonwealth Games medalist was the main protagonist of the day along-side last year’s series winner Paul Odlin (Village Cycles) in a race that was non-stop action from start to finish.
A record size field of nearly 120 cyclists that included thirteen teams lined-up for The Cyclery Timaru 120 held over 4 laps of an undulating circuit totalling 135 kilometres. As soon as the neutralized section was complete, attacks were made with disregard for the distance ahead. This was the pattern for the first lap before a 14-man group escaped shortly after the first passing of the start-finish line.
McCauley, team-mate Sam Horgan, and Tom Findlay (Subway Cycling Team) were the last to be included in this group after giving chase to join Odlin; Reon Park and Stephen Elden (Kelford – Reiker Cycling Team); James Gibson (Lowe & Associates); Joe Cooper (Subway Cycling Team); Alex McGregor (Cycling Otago); Daniel Barry (Benchmark Homes Cycling Team); Chris Nicholson (Star & Garter Wheelers – Tasman); Ashleigh Whitehead and Michael Vink (Delmaine Fine Foods); and Craig Lawn (Scott – Penny Farthing Cycles).
The fourteen riders rode well together building a lead of one minute 12 seconds at the 52km mark. Shortly after, Barry and Cooper forced the pace on a small rise and skipped clear. Unfortunately for the pair their chasers were still working hard and reeled them in before the half-way mark of the race as the fourteen leaders now led the reduced main field by 2 minutes 43 seconds. Immediate accelerations by both McCauley and Odlin dislodged Barry and Cooper from the group, and coupled with a crash by Whitehead, the lead group was reduced to eleven.
Lap three saw Gordon and Findlay go clear, and despite sharing the workload evenly, they gained never more than a ten second lead on Odlin and company who lost McGregor, Gibson, and the unlucky Vink who punctured.
The two leaders were recaptured at the close of the lap as the now eight-man lead group began the final 33km circuit with a 5 minute 50 second lead on the peloton. The odds appeared to be in favour of the teams of Benchmark and Kelford – Reiker who had the numbers advantage of two riders each in the break. And so it proved despite several more attacks by Odlin, when McCauley and Horgan were able to attack in unison which resulted in McCauley riding clear with less than 10 kilometres to ride.
The lone leader’s advantage remained at 5 – 10 seconds until he reached the residential streets of Timaru where the gap extended to 20 seconds. New Zealand cycling’s most prolific winner did not need any more invitation than the gap offered and gallantly held off his pursuers to win his first outing in the orange colours of his new sponsor.
At 13 seconds behind McCauley was former double-Olympian Nicholson who snuck past Horgan on the line as Odlin, Lawn, Findlay, Elden, and Park followed closely behind.
Barry did a fine ride to finish alone 5 minutes 3 seconds down to secure the team prize for the Benchmark Homes Cycling Team. Nimesha Smith (BikeRIGHT Cycling Team) continued with her good form from last weekend’s Tour of Canterbury to sprint home Cycling Otago’s Sara MacDonald to finish as first woman.
The day’s results produced leader changes in each of the four individual classifications as McCauley took over the series lead from the absent Marc Ryan (Kelford – Reiker Cycling Team), whilst Horgan (Under 23), Nicholson (Masters), and Smith (Women) all donned leader jerseys to wear into round three at Cust on April 5th. |

McCauley who had broken clear with Aaron Strong both worked hard to establish an insurmountable lead, 5km from the finish the hard man of New Zealand cycling hit Strong too hard with his trademark attack and raced to the finish line for his first victory in this event.

 | David Bowden, Genius Product Manager, reports in from Rotorua Half Ironman - 2007-12-17 The race got off to a slightly early start which caught a few athletes unawares, I had positioned well and slotted on to the back of the lead group of three as soon as we started. Unfortunately I had a moment of weakness just as my late starting brother finally caught the pack after 500m and started the fireworks that we had missed at the start, I was dropped in the ensuing excitement and left without feet to follow. I swam very poorly from the turn to home and lost several minutes. Rather disappointed with my swim and need to work out why I can’t turn training performance into race results in that discipline.
Transition involved a long run uphill but was pretty uneventful. The ride starts straight onto the hill out of the blue lake, despite taking this hill conservatively I started passing people immediately thanks to being much further down the field than I should have been. My speedo recorded just over 80kph down into Rotorua which is a bit faster than I’ve been on the tri bike in a while, unfortunately the roughness of the road and the speed meant that I lost quite a bit of fluid out of the aerodrink system. On the flats I quickly settled into a solid rhythm, my pacing strategy was pretty conservative in order to have a good run so I wasn’t hammering the hills and several times had to re catch and overtake riders that I passed on the flats only to be passed by on the hills. I was surprised to catch my brother inside 40km (this is the only competition that matters – the race within the race). The turn came all too soon and after a brief pause for eating an drinking I was back into my rhythm. With a slight tailwind heading along the flats the speed stayed high and the rattling from my now loose aerodrink was rather irritating. The ride finishes with climbing back up the hill to the lake and is feared by a lot of the competitors, I took this hill cautiously and lost a bit of time to the riders around me but it was worth it to avoid starting the run with trashed legs.
My average power was the same for each half of the bike leg and I split 1.16 on the way out and 1.18 on the way back. I find the 90km of a half to be over too quickly but on this occasion I didn’t fear the run as I had left so much in reserve.
I started the run in around 8th place and felt good from the outset. Unfortunately I fell when running down a hill after about 15mins (I was watching out for a dog on the path rather than watching where my feet were going), I jumped up immediately and started running again rather than stopping to think about the damage that I’d done, I figured that anything major would present itself in due course. I ran strongly for the remainder of the forest section and out on to the road. I was a bit disappointed to realize that the “lookout” that I’d heard so much about pre race was just a bump in the road with 10 steps going up on to it, I’d been anticipating an endless stair that would bring major suffering so the reality was something of a let down. The remainder of the first lap was on the road and offered two opportunities to get time checks on the opposition, the split to my brother was comfortable and he didn’t look to be moving any better than I was so I felt pretty good. Back past transition to start the second lap I was still feeling strong but the sand running was a bit sapping and once I hit the undulating forest trail I started to feel hints of weakness. At around 70mins I had quite a bad patch that I think was related to having lost my sports drink and so not quite met my nutritional requirements, it could also have been related to the damage I’d done earlier or even just not having done enough running in training. I worked through the bad patch but lost a couple of places as the chasers finally caught me, back on the road for the return home and I regained enough rhythm to have a decent run into the finish. One of the marshalls on an MTB rode beside me to ask if I was ok – I think the blood all down both shins had him a bit concerned, at that point all I was interested in was finishing so I assured him that I was fine and would deal with it soon.
I ran 1.35.16 to finish in 4.47.02 and 12th overall and first Clydesdale (a category for those over 90kg). Overall a solid race and a good test of the things I’ve been working on. Plenty of room for improvement still – lucky the season has several months to go so I can work on the weaknesses. It was a great event and I thoroughly recommend it for anyone wanting to challenge themselves in a half Ironman – a nice freshwater swim, a testing hilly ride and a scenic but tough run that is mostly on forest trails with a little bit of road and gravel running. I will be racing the Tauranga half Ironman in three weeks – a flat course suited to setting fast times where I’ll be hoping to be 20mins quicker, unfortunately the course lends itself to pelotons forming which is something I find very frustrating as I am a bigger guy than can power through the wind.
I appreciate the help of Genius bikes, Grammo, Powerbar Nutrition, Profile for the cool one piece race suit, Blue Seventy for the awesome Helix wetsuit and www.sportingedge.co.nz for the sportsbalm products that are helping my battered body to recover. |

 | Genius Win 2 Titles at Criterium Nationals - 2007-12-13 Jazz Apple Cycling Team's Malindi Maclean won the Elite Women's Criterium Nationals in New Plymouth on Sunday while Junior U19 Jazz teammate Emma Petersen finished 4th overall in the senior event and swept the title of Junior Champion simultaneously.
The first aggressions of the race were initiated by local Taranaki favourites, Kerri-Anne Torckler and Toria Anderson. Torckler was particularly prominent, actively contesting the cash primes. However, all efforts were negated by the Wellington based Science In Sports (SIS) squad and Jazz Apple. Team SIS captain Rachel Mercer and support rider Emma Crumm bravely tried to control the flurry.
By the final five laps it looked as if the dwindling bunch would contest a sprint but the Jazz Apple squad had other plans. Amassing at the front, and initiating the lead out was double Junior World Championship track medalist, Lauren Ellis who led the peleton single file that quickly disseminated the pack. Team mentor, Susy Pryde drove over the top of her Canterbury teammate with Malindi Maclean glued to Pryde's wheel. When the duo turned into the home straight, Maclean easily took the victory, while Pryde rolled over the line in second and Torckler was third.
The Jazz Apple Cycling Team now hold every Elite and U19 Road title in New Zealand, including the:
• Elite National Road
• Elite National Time Trial
• Club Road
• Club Time Trial
• Criterium
• U19 Club Road Title
• U19 Club Time Trial
• U19 Criterium

 | Jazz Apples Team ready for action! - 2007-11-25 The 2008 Jazz Apple Women's Cycling Team will open their international season with the New Zealand UCI Golden Bike Lake Taupo event this Saturday, November 24th. The Taupo festivities encompass auxiliary events, including an inaugural womens criterium. Jazz Apple Team Director Chris Drake is enthusiastic for the event, "This is the biggest cycling event in NZ and is the ideal showpiece for unveiling our sponsors and athletes".
Drake emphasized that the Jazz Apple’s will be finding their legs through the initial summer races. "Jazz are rebuilding with a synthesis of New Zealand's emerging talent and established campaigners with Olympic experience...we are pleased to retain the core of the 2007 contingent while recruiting promising talent".
The team hopes that the squads' future ambitions for growing the team into a UCI formation will eventuate, with the predominance of athletes coming from but not exclusively New Zealand. "The Jazz team have an essential Kiwi ethos with our title sponsors, athletes and Kiwi created Genius bicycles; however there’s an inevitability that off-shore talent will become both obligatory and welcomed to the Jazz squad to press forward internationally".
Jazz Apple is now in it’s third season of racing and for the first time will compete in New Zealand. The inclusion of NZ racing coalesces the teams' priority American NRC and Canadian racing objectives and markets, which will eventually encompass the burgeoning European Jazz Apple market. The Jazz Apple team management acknowledged that covering these markets could test the limits of the teams' youthful charges as they ride into the blaze of an endless summer of global competition but this is surely a good thing as this will help to increase the overall level of the team.

 | Crowther Wins Classic - 2007-11-19 Hi All,
I rode the "MAUNGATAUTARI 100KM CLASSIC ROAD RACE" yesterday and was able to come away with the win. There was some good prize money too! I actually thought I'd have a go early, so took off in the first few kms with Peter Rennie, and eventually Cameron Holt and Justin Kerr. We stayed away from the chasing group of 12 or so, and of course, in the last 1500 meters, all the cat-and-mouse games started. I managed to kick out of the last corner fairly well and held Justin off!

 | Eliot Crowther report from Lion Foundation Club Road Nationals - 2007-10-25 Hi All,
The road race on Sunday was a pretty long affair at 182 km. With about 90 odd starters, there was plenty of places to chill out and look after one's self. I didn't feel to hot to start off, so after waking the legs up for the first 10 - 20 km in the wind with a few tactically pointless jumps, I did exactly that - I began to look after myself. The first serious move of the day formed just before Kingseat, at around the ten kilometer mark, with a group of six riders including Aaron Strong (Genius), Karl Murray, Paul Odlin, Mark Langlands, Matt Sillars and Roman van Uden gaining around three minutes on what was a sporadic chase effort.
During the fourth lap, some fairly serious moves came from the likes of Tom Hanover, Alex Meenshorst, Joe Cooper and Sam Bewley. That quartet actually moved clear of the bunch by a couple of hundred meters at one point, but in the tail wind things resumed a sense of normality, when this move was brought back. This was actually quite good for me, because by now, my legs were well and truly awake, and, with the time gap to the initial six man break coming down to 45 seconds, things were starting to look good...
Three quarters of the way through the fifth lap (two and a bit laps to go...) the race winning move was formed by Jeremy Yates who was followed by another couple of riders. I was about six riders back, but jumped across on a small rise. Around the bottom corner and up past the feed zone I road hard, and managed to force the gap open to about 25 seconds by the finish line with Yates pulling some long turns too. The others in the move didn't follow up the feed-zone climb, leaving Jeremy and I to ride together. We worked well together as the race progressed, pushing out to a two minute gap by the last lap, a time which was held until the finish.
It was a pleasure to ride with Jeremy, the guy is very smooth and I felt that I learnt quite a bit from the day's race. In the last two kilometers, he was able to gap me, pushing out to an impressive win.
Kind regards, Eliot |

 | Shanks sees double at Lion Foundation Club Road Nationals! - 2007-10-21 Team Genius rider, Alison Shanks, has won the women's road race at the Lion Foundation Club Road Nationals in dominating fashion. | Another Title to Shanks! - 2007-10-21 Alison Shanks of Team Genius, riding her new Cronometro TT, has blitzed the field to take the Lion Foundation Club Road National Time Trial. |
 | Mike Northey wins at Te Awamutu - 2007-10-17 Attacking on the first lap of a 156km race may sound suicidal to most, but to newly signed Genius rider Mike Northey it was a good way to test his form leading up to the New Zealand National Road Championships to be held this weekend.
Northey was captured with 5 kilometres to go but by using his strength gained in Europe, he was able to outsprint his breakaway companions for a well earned victory.

 | Too Strong at Bruce Kent Memorial. - 2007-08-22 Team Genius rider Aaron Strong, recorded the fastest time at the recent Bruce Kent Memorial race. This prestigious yearly event attracts a classy field and this year was no exception. Strong commented "We caught break pretty quickly and 2nd break and had dropped half of our scratch guys by half way. Then our group was too big and very disorganised. I got fed up with 10km to go and started attacking the bunch once it became obvious we weren't going to get to the front of the race. Fastest time was still up for grabs. I finally got clear about 2k from the finish and stayed away to take fastest time solo. A good tune up for next weeks Auckland 1000 on the same course".
Strongs has been training well and continues to build his form with the goal of national selection for some of the upcoming international stage races. |

 | Toni reports from Tour of Bretange - 2007-07-26 Hi Everyone,
Well, it’s back into the racing mode again after a refreshing break for a few weeks. Our racing starts with the Tour of Bretagne which is a nice way to get back into the swing of things. Bretagne is up in the North of France, and unlike the South of France it is very green and rolling, mostly because it rains so much up there! The tour of Bretagne is a 5 day race starting in a small town called Redon, where we took up lodging in some lovely school accommodation. Actually it wasn’t really too bad at all, even the food was better than normal.
The NZ team consisted of Rosara Joseph, Marina Duvnjak, Michelle Kiesanowski, Carissa Wilkes, Tammy Boyd and me. The first day started with the usual pre-race lunch of chicken and pasta/rice. I think Rosara took a little getting used to this meal before racing.
The first stage as usual was fairly jumpy with everyone wanting to be a part of the race. It was a counterattack after the GPM that got the break away on the first day with me and 2 other French riders. We got away reasonably quickly and established a good break. The tour stages go from A to B and always end with 5-6 finishing circuits, so once we got onto those the end was in sight. Our time gap kept going up and down depending on what the bunch was doing behind us. The team did a good job of controlling the bunch and sounds like they quite enjoyed it. Coming into the finish line I knew that I would have to pull out something big to beat the other two riders, but in the end they were just too quick! So it was a 3rd place for me which set us up for the week ahead of racing.
The next couple of days were fairly aggressive with Marina getting up the road and helping to get another kiwi up on GC. She impressively won the 4th stage of the tour, getting a stage win for the team and moving herself up on the GC ranks. The French teams of Genevois and Futuroscope had a fair amount of work to do with various breaks going up the road. Thankfully we had kiwis in each of the breaks, which took the pressure off us.
A double day was scheduled for the last day with a time trial and a final road stage. Rosara decided to soft pedal the TT, only to do a pretty good time – who knows what she would have done if she went harder. Carissa had a good TT as well moving within striking distance of the young riders jersey. I managed to have a fairly good TT ending up 5th and moved back up to 3rd on GC after slipping down to 5th after Marina’s win.
The last stage was very frantic with attacks going left, right and centre, with the kiwis featuring in most moves.
At one stage there was 6 black jerseys on the front trying to split the bunch in up the hill in the cross wind, quite an impressive sight! Although in the end it come down to a bunch sprint, with Carissa getting up for a 5th placing I think, but unfortunately the allusive seconds that she needed for the young riders jersey were out of her reach. So at the end of the Tour, Team Genius had a stage win thanks to Marina (Pictured), GC positions of 3rd (Toni) and 6th (Marina) and an awesome amount of team work from the girls. It was a fun weeks racing and the girls are all coming into some good form so I’m looking forward to see how the team goes this week at Limousin.
Hope all is well, bye for now.

 | Jazz Apple's Maclean 1st and Shanks 3rd Stage One Tour de Delta - 2007-07-23 Jazz Apple's Malindi Maclean and Alison Shanks launched a stunning performance to win and place third consecutively in stage one's brutish Hill Climb of Tour de Delta.
Challenged with yet another soggy evening with greasy pavé, Maclean faced the vertically-inclined Leah Goldstein in a face-off in the 750metre wall. As the fastest seeded riders, the pair raced in a side by side TT with Maclean smoking out of the starting gate, leaving Goldstein swirling in her wake. Maclean blazed the hill, winning by a convincing ten second margin, while fellow Jazz Apple team-mate and Genius rider charged in for third place, less than a second behind Leigh Goldem (Giant).
Rushlee Buchanan headed to the line with good legs but her chances were dashed when she broke her pedal but a nano-second before the start. Buchanan will be allowed to start tomorrow, alongside team-mate Sarah Murdoch who put in a solid performance.
Tomorrow the Jazz Apple team head into stage two's criterium donning the Tour de Delta's leader's jersey. Watch for more updates!
Cheers

 | Jazz Apple's Maclean Second at Giro di Burnaby and 4th Tour de Gastown. - 2007-07-21 Jazz Apple's Malindi Maclean battled menacing conditions over the past two nights yet prevailed with two scintillating sprints that left the crowds holding their breath, and yet another podium finish for the young rising team.
In Wednesday's Gastown event in the heart of Vancouver's historic district, the team was fraught with misadventure. Cursed with the "worst conditions" (event organiser, Jonothon Wornell) in the history of the event, crash after crash evolved on the 1km technical course. Sliding out three times on the slick bricks, the on-form Rushlee Buchanan had to retire but only with minor injury. Alsion Shanks braved out the conditions trying hard for the tenacious young sprinter, Maclean but the duo could not make the decisive break of two who escaped the field with 12 laps remaining. Despite Maclean having to close gaps and accelerate past spills and mishaps during the entire shifty affair, the 18 year old still managed to ride herself into excellent position and deliver a dramatic nail-biting sprint to the line, which forced the finish judges into long careful deliberation of the eventual third place finisher. In the end, Maclean was crowned 4th, in an ever so close finish behind the on-form Shelley Olds, and ahead of the fast finishing Canadian Commonwealth Games road race competitor, Gina Grain.
There was no time to tarry before last night's Giro di Burnaby, as the Jazz Apple Cycling Team patched their bruises and reared for their next challenge around the streets of the Vancouver suburb of Burnaby. Facing more pleasing conditions of dry streets, the strong zephyrs buffeting the course became a major component in the race's proceedings. The Giant team, racing with 9 riders went on the attack, and Sarah Murdoch rode a gutsy race to be in the major moves. Buchanan was finding her legs after her spills the day prior and zipped off the front in some dangerous moves but was heavily marked by Shelley Old's, the Expresscopy team as well as Symmetrics. It was the national champion, Alison Shanks who darted off the front, and despite being heavily marked split the field with her strength around the 1.85km circuit. With 1.5 laps remaining, the Jazz Apple's assembled at the front and executed a brilliant lead out that strung the field out for the last 2.5km. Shanks detonated the field and only a diminished group were left to contest the line honours, with Maclean slipping out of Buchanan's slipstream with 200m remaining. Gaining an initial clear jump, the Team Genius rider burst forward on her Squadra toward the line with only Grain and Old's in view lunging. In another photo finish, it was Old's who just nipped Maclean by the tip of a tyre. Nonetheless the podium was yet another successful venture for the Jazz Apple's who will be gunning for more over the coming Tour de Delta.
Bye for Now.

 | Maclean rockets up hill climb! - 2007-07-16 In the first stage of the testing Tour de Whiterock in Canada's spectacular British Columbia, Jazz Apple's Malindi Maclean wheeled out her best climbing legs to finish fourth in the gruelling first stage, an 800m wall averaging 16%.
Maclean, best known for her lightening quick gallop, last night proved her versitility on progressing through the first time trial round, which seeded the fastest to slowest times over the climb, into the final five riders. These five went to a mass-start showdown over the vein bursting wall, with Maclean wrestling it out as one of the fastest climbers of the day.
Maclean of Team Genius put in a brave effort, and finished fourth in her first ever attempt at such an event, and is now informally crowned, 'Tenzing' in the team.
Bye for now.

 | Toni Bradshaw Reports from Canada - 2007-06-10 Hi Everyone,
We have been busy racing the last month or so, starting with the Tour de L'aude, which involves 10 days of crazy racing. Mostly the organisers try and see how hard they can make the stages before everyone cracks! Anyway I made it through that one doing pretty well. I had only one day where my legs kind of decided they had had enough. The organisers are actually nice enough to have a wee bash afterwards which was nice to have a few laughs and a few drinks of blanquette as well - As you can imagine after all that hard racing it didn't take much to feel the effects that's for sure!
We left for Montreal 2 days after that, arriving to some unpredictable weather conditions. The world cup went ok, the sun deciding that it was going to shine that day, thank goodness for that. The race itself was much harder and more aggressive than the year, so I was pleased with how things went considering everything.
Now the tour was completely different. We had a circuit race on the first day that was raced like a criterium only it was a 110km longs with around 24 corners in an 13km circuit, fun! The next day was horrendous in that we had a massive down pour of rain so much that it was flooding on the roads, this was preceded by some pretty spectacular thunder and lightning, and more rain. I was sure they were going to shorten the races, but no such luck, so was pleased to cross the finish line that day. The other strange thing of the tour was that all our races started at 5pm, which meant that by the time we got home etc, it was after midnight by the time we crawled into bed.
And where am I now? Well we are in Prince Edward Island for another bout of racing, a 5 day tour this time round. The trip down to PEI was really long -14hrs all up on a bus. Thank goodness someone thought to bring some dvds to entertain us for some of the time. The good thing is that we got to stop and have Mexican for dinner - yum yum! Haven't seen too much of PEI yet, but over the next few days we will be visiting different parts of the island. One of the stages is a 28km time trial over the confederation bridge. It is the bridge that links the island to Canada, but which has only been around for 10 years apparently. Anyway its nice to be by the water again and to have some sunshine.
The guys (Jacques, Grom and Spud) are all pretty gutted that they are down in PEI at the moment, as Montreal has the Formula one starting tomorrow. During the week leading up to our races in Montreal we rode out to the formula one track and rode our bikes around it.
We head back to France on the 16th June for a little break from racing - yay for us! I'm looking forward to having some down time to recuperate and build up to the next big event. Anyway best be off, bye for now. Toni Bradshaw |

Clark beat a world class field including Paul Amey, ex world Duathlon champion. Congratulations to Clark on a great result! |

 | Strong takes 2nd in Hamilton to Whangamata - 2007-04-30 Aaron Strong took second place at the weekends Hamilton to Whangamata ride. Strong and Torckler rode away from the rest of the field and sprinted for the finish with Torckler just edging out Aaron at the finish.
The return of this much-loved event had been eagerly awaited since its demise after the 2001 race and it did not disappoint with many riders having favourable comments to make about the atmosphere and organisation of the day and the scenery along the way. This year it was held on a fine autumn day, marred only by some chilly morning fog through the early flat sections of the course. The ride course was very beautiful with trees beginning to show their autumn colours in places and some spectacular scenery on show especially through the Karangahake gorge and through the hilly section towards the end looking out over the Pacific. |

 | Hyland reports from the Prix de la ville de Pujols - 2007-04-11 Hi Everyone,
Well after 45 hours of travelling I finally made it to France feeling pretty shattered but in one piece. It's mint weather over here with nice blue skies everyday but still pretty chilly out on the bike.
We had our first race yesterday which was the French cup race, Prix de la ville de Pujols. It had a large field with 105 starters and consisted of 5 laps featuring a decent 2km steep climb which climbed up to the finish line every time. I wasn't very confident with my form as I had two weeks off prior to leaving NZ due to injury and sickness, however I had a good race considering - climbing at the front setting my own tempo. On the first lap up the climb 14 of us got away and ended up staying away the whole race. Serena our team mate was also in the break with me and rode a great race especially as it's her first year over here in Europe.
On the last two laps attacks were going left, right and centre but nothing would stick. The final time up the climb there were three attacks that went and I went with the first two but just couldn't match the last one and ended up 7th, 2nd international rider. I was happy with how I went, just struggled with the jumps but that will come with all the racing we have coming up.
We have a big season ahead of us and lots of racing so the form will come up nicely as I get more races under my belt. We have a great group of girls over here with some real talent so hopefully we will get some good results.
Ill keep you all posted how the rest of the racing goes.
Bye for now.
Michelle Hyland. |

 | 2nd and 3rd for Team Genius - 2007-01-25 Team Genius have taken 2nd and 3rd place in the latest round of the Cyco criterium series held in downtown Auckland today. Darrin Strahan led a resurgent Ric Reid in a frantic dash for the line. A furious pace over the enclosing laps ensured no solo breakaways were to succeed. A strong headwind down the home straight meant that the final bunch sprint would only be fought out amongst the local hardmen. The race was marred by an accident halfway through the race with several riders going down in the blustery conditions. Worst off was Rosy McCall who hit the deck hard. We wish Rosy all the best on a speedy recovery. |

| Womens Elite National Road Champs - 2007-01-17 Hi Everyone,
The Women's Elite National Road Championships was held in Wellington over the weekend. The 100km course consisted of 2 big loops including a nasty 3km climb and 3 smaller loops including a descent 2km climb. The field was pretty strong and a decent size for a womens race, the hills were where all the action happened - the first time up Rosara Joseph (the mountain biking legend) drove the pace hard, with only 12 of us making the cut, another bunch of girls chased back on down the road. Dale Tye was very aggressive getting away, up and over the second climb solo with a group of 10 catching her over the other side. Unfortunately I didn't bring my climbing legs to Wellington and was having an absolute nightmare and missed the boat over the climb! So ended up chasing with Carissa Wilkes and Rushlee Buchannan. Dale Tye had a really bad spill around 60km's of the race and broke her collarbone after being so aggressive and having a stellar performance. Eventually we caught the main bunch, Alison Shanks attacked on the last lap up the climb and broke away with no reaction from the bunch and time trialled her way to victory - She was so strong on the hills and deserved to take the title. So the sprint was for second place, I was all ready to contest the sprint but got chopped and had no chance. My genius Team mate Toni Bradshaw had a strong performance being aggressive and active throughout the whole race. Being early in the season I had nothing in the legs up the climbs and was a bit disappointed wih my effort. It was a great honest course and the best person won on the day. It is very early in the season and I have a long season to go with a few local tours coming up such as the Bev Mays Tour then onto the Geelong Tour/World Cup and the Wellington Tour so hopefully I can get some results there.
My new Genius pony and wicked Grammo carbon wheels felt amazing to ride, they corner like a beauty and ride like a dream!
Cheers Michelle Hyland |

| Hyland reports from Jayco Bay Criterium Series - 2007-01-17 The 2007 Jayco Bay Criterium Series kick started our season of racing and it was a great series to do as the weather was amazing (35+ degrees) and the racing was very fast!
The series consists of 5 days of criterium racing based in Melbourne and Geelong and is a very prestigious series for the Australians so all the hard hitters were there ready to race. There were around 65 starters in the womens race every day and the racing was super hard and fast. On one of the days my average heart rate was 190 and my maximum reached 203!!!!
As it was the very beginning of our racing season we had no expectations from the team - just to go out there and give it our best and mix it up. Surprisingly we all had a pretty great 5 days of racing, the kiwis were by far one of the most aggressive teams out there - we worked really well as a team and had many top ten finishes. Unfortunately on the last day one of our girls (Tammy) had a spill and is now still recovering so hopefully she has a speedy recovery. Overall it was a wicked series to do and great training.
Our team consisted of:
Team: Bikenz
Toni Bradshaw (Team Genius)
Michelle Hyland (Team Genius)
Rushlee Buchanaan
Tammy Boyde
Rosara Joseph
Managers:
Susie Pryde

 | Michelle Hyland reports from MTB Worlds - 2006-09-06 Hi Everyone, Wow what an experience - To compete at the World Mountain Bike Championships held in Rotorua, New Zealand! At first it was a pretty daunting experience but as I started warming up for the race start the atmosphere seemed so much more relaxed and easy going with everyone going about their usual warm up routines.
We got called up to the line (I was called up very last as I didn't have an MTB UCI ranking) and then before we knew it we were off racing around the starting circuit which was a big lumpy slow paddock, I had a great start considering I was at the back, I was riding in the top ten until we climbed up this steep 200mtr climb - where three quarters of the field had to get off and run as we got the big squeeze effect and stuck behind girls that got off - This was mountain biking!!!
We then hit the main climb which was really severe - around 10 minutes of time in the hurt box, with really steep pitches you could hardly ride up. Unfortunately for me I got asthma the first time up the climb and never really recovered enough throughout the race so I was creeping up the climbs enjoying the scenery of the Rotorua Lake in the background.
After the main climb came some fun technical bits as well as another steep climb up to the feed zone, we then dropped into the forest section which was the most technical bit with steep off camber corners, drop-offs, log obstacles and the famous rock garden. The course was unrelenting, you never got a break and it was a real tough-mans course. It was one of the hardest races I've ever done but in saying that Im pleased I did it as it was a great experience and something I may never get the chance to do again. I was disappointed with my race as i feel I could have done better if I didn't experience the asthma but i did what I could on the day with what I had so no regrets.
I finished 22nd out of only 31 which is not too bad for a roadie, and I was just stoked to finish as it was an epic course.
The rest of the week was spent watching the other events, I loved watching the four cross and the down hill - those guys are seriously crazy. The elite men and women's cross country was great to see as they made it look so easy and it was wicked to see world class mountain bikers in action with our very own kiwis right up there amongst it. |

 | Clark Ellice finishes in 16th place at the Worlds! - 2006-09-06 Clark Ellice has stormed to 16th place in the World Triathlon Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland. After a powerful swim Ellice put his Alpine training to good use, flying over the testing bike course in a time of 1.02.29, with an average speed of 38.2km/h. Coming into the run Ellice was confident of his form and it showed with a time of just 31.42. Ellice finished jiust 2.12 down on the newly crowned world champion Tim Don. Congratulations to Clark on a fantastic result. Photo by Frank Wechsel. |

| Toni Bradshaw reports in after riding Route de France - 2006-08-16 Hey Everyone, I just got back from the Route de France race, so thought I would drop you a line. Another 9 day tour under the belt, feeling a bit shattered from it still, hopefully will feel better after a couple days rest.
The tour started up in the Normandie region of France, it is very beautiful although a long way to drive. We slowly made our way down the country, racing through some interesting areas, to finish the last day just out of Agen really. The racing was fast and furious, with one horrible day of rain, crosswinds and loads of crashes!! Needless to say things got split up a little! I started out a bit slow, but came through towards the end of the tour and felt things went ok given the block of training I have just done. It was fun to have a few goes at attacking and generally getting in moves, I have still to work on my finishing ability, but guess that comes with some aggression and strength. Sometimes the finishes can be a little overwhelming with bikes going everywhere. I can't get over how strong and powerful the top girls are, I don't think they actually get tired! The field was a good strong one without any hubbards, I finished 27th overall, so I'm remaining fairly consistent, just need to reach that next level now! I also can't wait to get home and have a decent bike to ride, our Le Pruneaux D'Agen team bikes are rubbish I have decided. Nothing like my Genius Squadra!!
I am off again at the end of the week to do Trophee D'ior and then on to Plouay, so will be a busy few weeks. Will keep you posted over the next few weks. Ciao everyone! Tones |

| Toni Bradshaw reports from the Grand Boucle - 2006-07-17 Hi Everyone,
Summer has really kicked in full force over here. Our little apartment which is upstairs, is like a sauna and the wee fan we have going just isn't cutting it! Oh well can't really complain, just a bit hard to get a good sleep in at the moment.
I have just got back from my latest racing experience, the Grand Boucle. It was a 5 day tour, which seemed to take in quite a few of the famous sites of France. One of the stages started at the Pont de Gard just out of Nimes, while another stage had us climbing the famous Mont Ventoux climb (22km climb with an average gradient of 7% and a max of just over 10%).
The average temperature for the tour was high 30's, so you can imagine the state we were in at the end of it all! The whole tour was fairly mountainous and our team seemed to go pretty well really. My team mates won a couple of stages and the rest we finished in the top 7. I finished 7th overall, but have a bit of work to do on my descending ability, man those girls go fast down the mountains! Hope all is good with everyone. Ciao Toni. |

 | Clark Ellice reports in from Clermont, France - 2006-06-02 Hi Everyone,
Its still very cold here in clermont ferrand in the central massif region of auvergne here in France.
I am based here for the next five months basically to train my butt off and get strong, race hard in world cups around Europe and inevitably get selected for the elite NZ team for triathlon for the World Triathlon Championships in Lusanne, Switzerland in September.
I am in good shape at the moment and my next biggy is the South Africa World Cup where I aim to top ten in this race to basically confirm any doubts the selectors might have to not select a first year elite coming from the U23 Elite ranks.
The team I race for here in Montlucon France is not a big team, but very supportive in getting me to France, paying for my airfares, accom and food and they even give me race bonuses if I do well in the French Grand Prix.
So i am standing by them for the second year and this year we are lucky to have Paul Amey racing for us as well (Elite world Duathlon Champion 2005).
So its cool, very exciting and hopefully i can send you some even better news next month after the South African World Cup. Cheers
Clarky. |

| Montreal World Cup - 2006-06-02 Toni Bradshaw has had a great race to finish 25th in the latest round of the Womens World Cup in Montreal, Canada. The race, run over an 11 lap course and finishing up a nasty climb, annihilated the field with over half the riders not finishing or finishing outside the time limit! Finishing only 1.33 behind the winner, Toni put some of her form to good use helping her Pruneaux d'Agen team mate Edwige Pitel finish in 9th position. The race was won by former world champion Judith Arndt with Welsh whirlwind Nicole Cooke finishing a close second. |

My friend Tammy and I are riding for them. The first major race is the Tour de L'aude, which is a 10 day stage race held around the area where we are based and very mountainous!
Next up is the Montreal World Cup and Tour at the end of May.
I'll try to keep you updated as the season progesses. Wish me luck! Cheers Toni Bradshaw. Photo :: Ben Atkins |

 | Kiwi Clark Ellice 2nd in Noumea International Triathlon - 2006-05-04 Kiwi Clark Ellice has had a fantastic race to finish second behind former NZ athlete and World Duathlon Champion Paul Amey in the Noumea International Triathlon held in New Caledonia. After an ultra fast bike leg on his Genius Diablo, Ellice had a great final leg running down both Amey and local favourite Patrick Vernay. Coming down to the final kilometre Amey used his previous 10k running skills to produce one final kick and beat Kiwi Ellice for the win. Congratulations to Clark from all the Genius Team on his great result! Ellice will now head to the French Grand Prix. |
